Freediving in Xiaoliuqiu – Taiwan’s Underwater Gem

If you’ve ever dreamed of freediving in Xiaoliuqiu-diving into warm blue water, cruising past sea turtles, and sinking into a stillness that makes your soul exhale-welcome to one of Taiwan’s most iconic underwater destinations. Just a 25-minute ferry from Donggang, this coral island has quietly become one of the best places to freedive in Asia, and arguably the best place to freedive in Taiwan.

As the owner of a freediving school in Xiaoliuqiu, I might be biased. But I’ve dived, coached, and trained all over-and something about Xiaoliuqiu keeps pulling people deeper. Literally and metaphorically.

Why Xiaoliuqiu Is Perfect for Freediving

1. Calm, Warm Waters Year-Round
Unlike many training spots that shut down for winter, Xiaoliuqiu’s subtropical climate keeps the ocean open for business all year. Visibility can hit 25+ meters on a good day, and the water stays pleasant even in the colder months.

2. Shore Access to Depth
You don’t need a boat to reach 30meters. A swim from shore and you’re over the drop-off. That makes logistics simple and training affordable.

3. Consistent Conditions for Progress
Low currents, minimal waves, and protected areas mean more training days and fewer cancellations. That consistency is key to breakthroughs.

4. Sea Turtles and Coral Reefs
Training aside, this place is just magic. Turtles drift past you during breath-holds. It’s hard not to fall in love with diving all over again.

A Freediving Hotspot in Taiwan

Freediving isn’t just a sport here-it’s part of island life. I remember one of my students from Taipei saying, “This is the only place I’ve ever felt like holding my breath was a normal hobby.” It stuck with me, because it’s true-you’ll see locals nod at you with your monofin like it’s just another Tuesday. You’ll find:

  • Dedicated schools (like ours)
  • Depth lines off the beach
  • A mix of athletes, beginners, and lifestyle divers
  • Freediving-friendly cafes, accommodations, and gear shops

Even the local fishermen are used to seeing people in wetsuits everywhere. It’s not weird. It’s normal.

Final Thoughts: Go Deeper Than Just Depth

Freediving in Xiaoliuqiu isn’t just about chasing meters. It’s about finding something quieter—your rhythm, your breath, your reset button. It’s about floating above coral, brushing past turtles, and surfacing with that stupid grin you didn’t even know was there. Some people come here for a weekend. Some never really leave.
Either way, this island has a way of getting under your skin—in the best possible way.
